Celebrating the inventor of the first battery

Today Google’s doodle is celebrating the man credited with inventing the battery, Alessandro Volta, who would have been 270 – Hooray!

It’s amazing to think that battery technology has developed from the chance coupling of two metals across a frog’s leg (discovered by Galvani) to the high density, high power nanoparticle-based lithium ion cells we find in hybrid electric cars today. The fact that it’s taken more than two centuries of research to get this far shows that the “impact” of science isn’t immediately obvious, but ultimately inventions like Volta’s can have dramatic effects on people’s lives. But there’s still lots more research to be done to find better ways to produce, store and use electricity… time to get into the lab!
